The Pygmy Nuthatch is a tiny, energetic bird with soft gray and buff plumage, topped by a distinctive brown cap. Found in pine forests of western North America, these birds are known for their acrobatic antics, often darting up and down tree trunks in search of insects and seeds. They have a charming habit of roosting in groups, cuddling together in tree cavities to stay warm. Their rapid, high-pitched "peep" calls are a constant background music in their habitats. Pygmy Nuthatches are highly social, often hanging out with Chestnut-backed Chickadees, forming mixed-species flocks that work together to find food and stay safe.
